I wish I could frog my computer

We have three of them in the house at the moment (I won't include the many carcasses that are stored under the house awaiting a cheap recycling option) and the only one working at present is the little Apple ibook.
In a predictable sequence of events as soon as I was able to purchase a wireless card for the ibook the power supply of the Dell Desktop died. Not in any spectacular fashion - it just faded away.
Its partner, the generic 'Games' Desktop, had never recovered from one of the lightning bolts that had struck our house several months ago. It seemed to have suffered brain damage and barely knew it was a computer. No Network, no Video Card and definitely no Internet. It was usable if you wanted to work with DOS games - that kept some people happy but I wasn't one of them.

The ibook has been my cyber life saver - I have been able to keep up with all my blogs and email with the added bonus of being able to wander from kitchen to lounge, unhindered by cables or peripheries. I'm amazed at why I didn't do this sooner.

There has to be a down side of course - Printers.

I'm trying to beat the cold weather and knit a scarf from some very soft Eki Riva babycashmere. (Oh No! they're having a sale. I mustn't look!)
This was promised last winter so I'm only a little bit late. The pattern I want to use is the Irish Hiking Scarf - so loved by many ISE4 participants. I have it on the screen in front of me and when I went to print it out I found out that my new, state-of-the-art Lexmark all-in-one printer, that beats as it sweeps as it prints, is NOT compatible with the ibook or any other Mac device. This is despite reviews and other promo material all saying it is. I am not impressed and am only beginning to get an inkling of the discrimination dyehard mac users have to put up with every day.

It won't stop me knitting the scarf of course - it just makes it a bit harder to put the pattern in the knitting bag, and it's not as though I haven't got a couple, several, lots of other things to be getting on with.

Both the PC's are at the vet at the moment and I'm hoping I'll see them back tonight all fixed and ready to go. Despite this the trust has gone , the switch has been made. The computer of choice is this little white one in front of me that has patiently served it's time as DVD player, chess game and juke box. I think I'll call it Cinderella.

The bastards! I just tried a few secret google tricks I know and you're right - they don't make a printer driver for Mac for this model. Bastards!

I had the exact same problem. I ended up getting a Brother. The ink is cheaper but its an all in one!!

And oh, scarf patterns!! I need to knit up a scarf too but can't find any decent patterns - for a guy anyway =)

The IHS pattern lent itself to writing out by hand--at the time, I didn't even own a printer! I made two-at-a-time for Christmas gifts for my son and son-in-law; when my auntie saw the one I was knitting for my brother, she asked for one in red--but short. I think at this point I've made 7. Great pattern!

Technology - hah! Just when we think we've got it all under control...

A bit like cars really - mine has a cracked head and needs to be replaced; which we had planned to do early next year (not now with our trip to NT only a few weeks away!)

Love the changing pictures from WWKIP Day - I was there with you in spirit; I did knit nearly all the way to our friends' (in the appalling weather conditions - about 71/2 hours!) Maybe in the car counts as knitting in public?

My sympathies - computers are the devil's curse to womankind. We can't live with them and we can't .....you know how it goes. I am a longtime Mac user, mainly because I had only used DOS based computersuwith those terrible little >prompts. When I had the opportunity I converted the small office I worked in to Macs - which was not really a bright idea, as the computer section regarded PCs as king and we got pushed to the bottom of the line for service.

My Mac love affair spilled over into home. We eventually got rid of the old DOS based computers that were cluttering up the home office, but now we have two computers - an old iMac (which was dieing - that spelling looks very strange - paerhaps it's the effects of the G&T I've just inhaled ) and a newer iMac and THREE printers - the old Lexmark wouldn't work with Mac OS X so I had to get a new one (Epson). On the same day that I brought it home, Grandpa Flea arrived home with an old Epson that one of his coffee group friends donated to the cause - it worked, but we kept the one I'd bought as well. Now we are trying to consolidate all our files so we only have to take one computer with us.

Earlier, I had a Mac Classic and when I tried to dispose of it in an environmentally friendly manner, I couldn't find anyone who'd take it, so it had to go out on the council clean-up - and someone came along and cut all the connections to the mouse and the keyboard - presumably to reclaim the ?copper in the cords.

PS I've just ordered the Cleckheaton book and yarn for the jacket you knitted.
